Fabrizio Romano says Newcastle will be able to sign ‘intelligent’ player on a free transfer in 2025

Fabrizio Romano has got some good news for Newcastle United ahead of 2025.

After two difficult transfer windows in 2024, Newcastle United will be hoping to change their fortunes next year.

PSR has made recruitment very difficult at St James’ Park, with the Magpies unable to majorly enhance their first-team squad.

But that will hopefully change in 2025, with Newcastle planning to sign a new striker. It is clear that Eddie Howe needs reinforcements in that position, with Callum Wilson, whose contract expires at the end of the season, yet to play a single minute of the 2024/25 campaign due to injury.

Newcastle looking at Jonathan David

Toon officials are looking at possible signings, and Jonathan David is very much on their radar.

Newcastle have contacted David’s representatives about a possible deal, with the Lille striker on course to become a free agent at the end of the season.

That makes David, who has scored 13 goals in 19 appearances this season, a very appealing option for Newcastle, as well as various other clubs across Europe. His contract status is going to make him a man in demand, and it is a contract status that is not going to change between now and the summer of 2025.

Fabrizio Romano shares update on Jonathan David’s future

That is according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who has shared his latest information on the future of the Canada international on his YouTube channel.

“My information remains the same, Jonathan David is not signing a new deal at Lille,” he said.

“Jonathan David is not expected to sign a new deal at Lille in the next weeks or months.

“So Jonathan David will be one of the big names for summer 2025. I can guarantee that clubs from La Liga, Premier League and Serie A are reaching out to understand the situation with Jonathan David.

“It is a big opportunity. He’s scoring goals in the Champions League and has always been a crucial player for Lille. Big opportunity on the market, which is why many clubs have already started to reach out and present their project.”

Romano added: “The expectation is for Jonathan David to take some time. It is not something to happen in November or December. It’s probably going to be in the next months when all the projects will be clear so David can make the best decision possible.”

Newcastle could sign a very ‘intelligent’ striker on a free transfer

Newcastle United are going to have the chance to sign David on a free transfer. He has no plans to remain at Lille, and will be embarking on a new chapter of his career in 2025.

That presents clubs like Newcastle with an opportunity, as you do not always get the chance to sign a player of David’s calibre on a free. Of course, a free transfer is not really free, as there is always a bigger signing on fee and loftier wages, but it is certainly an avenue that Newcastle could look to go down – especially if Alexander Isak’s future remains up in the air.

In Isak, Newcastle have a very clever striker. Isak works extremely hard for Newcastle, while he is great at leading the press. He brings more than just goals, of which there are plenty.

And the same can be said for Jonathan David, who Canada manager Jesse Marsch believes is one of the most intelligent players he has ever worked with.

“He’s the most intelligent football player I’ve ever coached,” Marsch told TSN.

“His ability to take information and apply it and understand exactly why we’re doing something, what the expectations are for him and his role and how to execute are better than any player I’ve ever worked with.

“We all see the highlights and the goals, but there is so much more underneath why he is so good. Most of his goals are not about being bigger, faster, stronger and more technically gifted, he’s a faster thinker than almost everyone on the pitch. That is a special quality that is not so easy to teach.”

In a perfect world, it would be amazing if Newcastle could have Isak and David on their books. It would give Eddie Howe arguably the best attacking duo in the Premier League.

But there will be a lot of competition for the 24-year-old’s signature, while it might be difficult for Newcastle to tempt David to Tyneside if Isak is still at St James’ Park as the Magpies’ main striker.
