Reports suggest Manchester United could make a move to sign a forgotten Newcastle United graduate.

It has been a strong week for several former Newcastle United players, with Miguel Almiron scoring his first Atlanta United goal since completing his move in January.

Newcastle’s other major departure over the winter was Lloyd Kelly, and the 26-year-old overcame a shaky start in Italy before featuring in their 1-0 win over Genoa.

But the biggest shock news came when reports linked a forgotten former Newcastle United star with a move to Manchester United this summer.

Freddie Woodman linked with Man United move

According to The Sun, Manchester United are considering a move for current Preston North End goalkeeper Freddie Woodman.

Like Newcastle, the Red Devils are shopping around for a goalkeeper this summer and they have set their sights on the 28-year-old shot-stopper.

Woodman came through Newcastle’s academy as a youngster before breaking into the first team in 2014.

However, he found it difficult to claim the No.1 goalkeeper spot and only made nine senior appearances for Newcastle before leaving in 2022 for Preston.

Woodman wanted a new challenge after spending eight years as a senior Newcastle player – most of that time spent as a back-up option.

Woodman desperately wanted to start for Newcastle, but he realised his best chances of regular minutes was to move on – now he is being linked with a move to Old Trafford.

Newcastle United could do business with Man United this summer

Manchester United’s transfer plans this summer extend beyond Woodman and could also include a direct deal with Newcastle.

That is because Sean Longstaff has been linked to Manchester United again after he was initially linked with a move back in 2019.

Manchester United fans aren’t keen on signing Longstaff, but the rumours of a summer move refuse to go away.

Eddie Howe confirmed Longstaff’s future is “unclear” this week, and as an academy graduate his sale would represent pure profit for PSR.

However, Newcastle need more homegrown players to abide by Uefa rules next season so there is also a chance that Longstaff could stay.
