PIF have masterminded £400,000 per week PSR boost for Newcastle United

Newcastle United are finally getting to grips with the Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Those three letters (PSR) have become dreaded around Newcastle United after the financial regulations essentially slowed the club’s growth.

The Profit and Sustainability Rules state that Premier League clubs cannot lose in excess of £105million over a rolling three-year period, so Newcastle have had to monitor their spending closely and even complete sales they didn’t necessarily want to make.

PIF invested heavily in Newcastle’s first-team squad when they first arrived as owners, but that spending meant that there has now been no major upgrades to the starting XI in the last few transfer windows.

Eddie Howe warned the squad is growing ‘stale’, but Newcastle’s patience should pay off with a big summer of investment expected this time around.

How PIF have added £400,000 per week to Newcastle’s PSR

Newcastle’s hierarchy has been working hard behind the scenes to try and boost revenue and navigate the Premier League financial rules.

The £320m revenue generated by Newcastle in 2023/24 exceeded expectations, and with Champions League qualification on the horizon that figure should continue to grow rapidly.

But another unexpected improvement in revenue has come through the Sela Stack fan zone built outside of St James’ Park.

According to The Chronicle, the Stack has proven capable of generating £400,000 per week having become a popular meeting place for fans.

That will provide a major PSR boost to Newcastle and their matchday income figures. Matchday income was recorded at £50.1m in the latest accounts, up from £37.9m the year prior.

What Paul Mitchell said about Newcastle’s Stack fan zone

The Stack fan zone has been a “rip-roaring success” for PIF and Newcastle United as a whole. It has added to the community feel around St James’ Park and is also pouring extra revenue into the club.

Back in November, sporting director Paul Mitchell joked: “I am trying to work out if it is appropriate to come in (to the STACK) and have a few pints to support PSR for January.

“Is that one of my new roles? I’ll put something on social media please free to join on a Tuesday afternoon.”

It is Mitchell who will now be handed a much bigger budget for the upcoming summer window after Newcastle made a net profit in January and last summer.

Newcastle are set for a £73m PSR boost in July once the losses from the 2021/22 financial year drop out of the three-year equation.
