Newcastle United finally look set to make their first senior signing of the summer transfer window.

A deal to bring Sandro Tonali to St James’ Park has been done for over a week, but we are still yet to see the midfielder be officially unveiled by the club.

That has been because of the Under-21 European Championship, where Tonali has been representing Italy. However, they were knocked out last week, meaning his transfer to Newcastle would accelerate.

There was hope that he would arrive in the North East late last week. That was then put off until Monday, and there have since been claims that he is not going to land in Tyneside until Wednesday.

Regardless, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano believes that today (July 3rd) is the day for Tonali to officially join Newcastle from AC Milan for £55million.

Newcastle to announce Sandro Tonali transfer today

Romano has taken to Twitter to state that the deal for the 23-year-old is definitely done and that he expects an announcement from the club on Monday.

On Tonali, he wrote: “Done. Signed. Sealed. You can consider him a Newcastle player. Get ready for club statement probably today.”

That is excellent news for Toon fans, who are really eager for this transfer to be finalised. It has been a done deal for a while, but there has been some restlessness from supporters as to why there has been such a delay. And it has only been amplified after missing out on the likes of James Maddison and Dominik Szoboszlai to Tottenham and Liverpool respectively.

The Tonali delay has been out of Newcastle’s hands, and in truth is meaningless ahead of the start of pre-season training. Whether the transfer was announced last week or he is unveiled today, Tonali won’t be involved in training immediately.

He will have a break after his 2022/23 season only just came to an end after his involvement in the Under-21s competition in Romania. It is unknown when he will link up with his new teammates on Tyneside.

Soon the hard work will begin for Tonali, who should be braced for an extremely difficult pre-season under his new manager Eddie Howe.
