Newcastle United are closing in on announcing their first major signing of the summer.
Yankuba Minteh’s arrival has already been confirmed, but he is one for the future. Newcastle need ready-made reinforcements ahead of competing in the Champions League, and are on the verge seismically improving their midfield.
After a failed bid for Nicolo Barella, Newcastle have moved for his fellow Italian Sandro Tonali. He has agreed to join the Magpies, with AC Milan set to receive a transfer fee of £55million.
The deal is basically done, but confirmation has been put on hold as Tonali finishes off his season. While most other players are now on holiday, he has been in Romania representing Italy at the Under-21 European Championship.
However, they have now been knocked out of the competition, which is good news for Toon fans who are eager to see Tonali unveiled as a Newcastle United player.

Sandro Tonali set to arrive in Newcastle
Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie has stated that he believes the deal will now accelerate following Italy’s elimination, and the Northern Echo have provided some more information.
According to the Northern Echo, Tonali and his Italy teammates will leave Romania today. They add that the 23-year-old is then expected to travel to Tyneside before the end of the week to finalise his move to St James’ Park.
You would expect that Tonali and his entourage will look to get the deal completed as soon as possible. That means he will have more time to enjoy a post-season break ahead of what will likely be a gruelling pre-season under Eddie Howe.

Tonali is a really exciting signing by Newcastle. He has already been described as a ‘leader‘ at 23, and has so much room for improvement. He will do that at St James’ Park, like so many players have done under Howe.
With Italy out of the Under-21 Euros, Tonali can now focus his efforts on his future with Newcastle. Everything appears to be in place – all we need is the man himself to land in the North East and make it official.
