Newcastle United still need a long-term replacement for Callum Wilson and Jonathan David has emerged as a potential target.
The Tyneside club did address their lack of depth up front over the summer by striking a £10m deal with Sheffield United for William Osula.
It looked as though Callum Wilson could leave Newcastle this summer but William Osula was ultimately brought in to add depth and an extra option rather than to replace him.
But at 32, Callum Wilson is not getting any younger and, unfortunately, he continues to be plagued by injuries. A new striker will be needed sooner rather than later.

Newcastle United links to Jonathan David
Newcastle United were linked with a move for Jonathan David during their search for a new striker this summer, but Lille’s hefty asking price made a deal impossible.
David would have cost Newcastle £40m this summer so Newcastle chose to walk away from a potential deal in what may turn out to be a masterstroke.
The 24-year-old is in the final year of his contract at Lille and will be available as a free agent next summer – that is, of course, if he doesn’t extend his stay with a new deal this season.
Newcastle have been named as a contender to sign David, but he has also attracted interest from the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester United.
There will be fierce competition to sign Jonathan David if he is available for free next summer, but there is no reason why Newcastle shouldn’t throw their names into the hat for the “fantastic” striker.
Fabrizio Romano shares update on Jonathan David’s future
Everything hinges on whether David will become a free agent next summer or whether he signs a new contract at Lille.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has now shared an update on David’s contract situation, and it is promising news for Newcastle.
Via his column on Caught Offside, Romano said: “Jonathan David has spoken about being open to signing a new contract with Lille, but I don’t think it’s likely from what I know.

“The situation for his future is more open than limited to new Lille deal. He’s going to explore several options before deciding anything, so I think there are a few long months ahead to consider all opportunities, and nothing specific with other clubs to mention yet.”
That is music to Newcastle’s ears. If David is willing to explore his options and is tempted by a move to the Premier League, Newcastle should be right in the mix for his signature.
