Callum Wilson will be extremely concerned by what Newcastle United are planning to do

Newcastle United have been unable to rely on Callum Wilson so far this season.

The 32-year-old has not played for the Magpies since May, with Callum Wilson missing all of pre-season and subsequently every competitive game since the 2024/25 campaign kicked off.

A back problem and subsequent hamstring issue have derailed another season for the Newcastle United number nine, with Eddie Howe once again relying on Anthony Gordon to play up front amid Alexander Isak’s toe injury.

Newcastle really need a backup striker who they can rely on right now, and the hope is that Wilson will be back for the Brighton game on October 19th.

However, the Magpies’ long-term plan might not include the England international.

Newcastle United’s striker plan is bad news for Callum Wilson

According to iNews, Newcastle United are currently in the market to sign another striker. That is despite bringing Will Osula to the club from Sheffield United during the summer transfer window.

Osula is still seen as a project player by Newcastle – someone who is young and will develop in the coming years, but is not quite ready to play a starring role.

With the Magpies looking at possibly signing another forward, that is not good news for Wilson and his future on Tyneside.

He is in the final year of his contract at St James’ Park, and it remains to be seen if he will be offered an extension. The fact that Newcastle are looking at striker options suggests they are planning for a future without him.

Strikers that Newcastle United could target

With Newcastle looking at strikers they could possibly sign, there are a couple of cheap options that could appeal to them in 2025.

The first is Jonathan David, whose Lille contract is due to expire next summer. Geordie Boot Boys have been told that Newcastle have spoken to David’s representatives, as they aim to discover what kind of wages it would take to tempt the Canadian forward to Tyneside.

Another option in a similar situation situation is Dominic Calvert-Lewin. He is also in the final year of his contract, and has been heavily linked with the Magpies over the years.

Newcastle almost signed Calvert-Lewin in the summer, and it would not be a shock if they made a fresh approach in 2025 amid his current contract status.
