Newcastle United have decisions to make over the next few transfer windows.

While it seems Newcastle fans should not expect any major money being spent during the January transfer window, it will be fascinating to see what happens next summer.

Indeed, the club still reportedly need to make player sales in order to balance the books on the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability (PSR) front, albeit that doesn’t necessarily mean any of their big name players have to go.

At some point, however, Eddie Howe’s squad will need a refreshment. Not spending and eliminating the risk of a potential points deduction for any potential PSR breaches is perhaps understandable but it does not make the job any easier for the Newcastle United manager.

Whether players are sold or let go upon the expiration of their contract, the squad will need to change at some point. Howe cannot be expected to keep working miracles.

Still, it seems some of the players who are coming towards the end of their deals could in fact stay at St James’ Park.

Emil Krafth and Fabian Schar are reportedly both in talks over a new contract and Howe recently dropped a hint in regards to Callum Wilson, who he hailed as “incredible”.

Still, asked about the forward, Howe told The Chronicle): “Is there a scenario where Callum could stay beyond his current deal? Of course there is.

“Callum’s got outstanding qualities. I know everyone in football has short memories, but you look at what Callum has done since I’ve been here – when he’s been on the pitch, he’s been incredible.”

Newcastle have to be ruthless with Callum Wilson

Howe is right, Wilson has been a brilliant player for Newcastle – when fit.

Still, his fitness record leaves an awful lot to be desired and it would be a surprise to see it improve into his mid-thirties.

While it’s promising to see Wilson is close to making a comeback, the time will soon be right for him to go.

Newcastle just simply cannot rely on him.
