It seems the priorities have changed at Newcastle United of late.
Indeed, while last summer was spent pursuing the signing of Crystal Palace and England defender Marc Guehi, Newcastle may be about to shift focus.
Rather than go big on the signing of a defender in January, the club are reportedly ready to prioritise a move for a new right winger.
With Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles to return at some point, Eddie Howe will certainly have options at the back.
Dan Burn has been allowed to move into a central position too, with Lewis Hall impressing at left-back.
It seems as if Newcastle are happy with their current lot in defence and could even look to extend the contracts of two players in particular.

The two players Newcastle are currently in contract talks with
According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle are in talks with both Fabian Schar and Emil Krafth over the prospect of new deals.
The pair will both be out of contract in June but there is a positive feeling that they both still have a lot to give despite their relatively advanced ages (32 and 30 respectively).
Interestingly, the report adds that Schar and Krafth are neighbours and are happy on Tyneside.
Newcastle United have made a huge transfer U-turn
Given just how strongly they went after Guehi, to reportedly shelve plans to spend big on a new defender and focus on keeping what they currently have is quite the U-turn.
That’s not to say it’s the wrong decision of course and the need for a new right winger is fairly urgent but it perhaps does not speak to the most coherent of strategies.
The club have known Botman and Lascelles will be back at some point and Howe has constantly talked up Krafth, so why go so big on Guehi over the summer?
It does not make a huge amount of sense…
