Newcastle United are set to announce the signing of Sandro Tonali, but he will not be joined by Felix Nmecha at St James’ Park.
The Magpies have spent the majority of the transfer window so far searching for midfield reinforcements, with the club launching a failed bid for Nicolo Barella. There was also interest in Declan Rice, but he also proved to be too expensive.
Now Newcastle are getting their man, with Tonali due to be unveiled as a Toon player this week – possibly as early as today (July 3rd).
But while Tonali is set to become Toonali, another Newcastle midfield target is securing a move elsewhere.
Newcastle target Felix Nmecha off to Borussia Dortmund
According to Fabrizio Romano, Felix Nmecha is now going to sign for Borussia Dortmund on a five-year contract. He states that a deal to sign the 22-year-old is ‘done’, with Dortmund paying Wolfsburg £25.7million for the former Manchester City youngster.

Romano adds that Nmecha ‘won’t join Newcastle’ – which is obvious if he is signing for the Bundesliga giants.
Nmecha is now another midfielder who the Magpies have missed out on, with the likes of James Maddison and Dominik Szoboszlai going elsewhere last week.
But while those transfers hurt supporters, most Toon fans won’t be too disappointed about missing out on Nmecha.
While he is a talented player and someone who Eddie Howe really likes, he merely felt like a cheaper alternative to some of our other targets. He would not have been a marquee arrival like Tonali is going to be.

But Dortmund obviously see something special in Nmecha, as they look to fill the void that Jude Bellingham has left behind after signing for Real Madrid.
Perhaps we will see just how good Nmecha is next season, if we come up against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League. That would give supporters and officials the perfect chance to see if we made a mistake not going all in on the man likened to Zinedine Zidane.
