A new name is on Newcastle United’s radar, with the Magpies set to make a bid for Wolfsburg midfielder Felix Nmecha.

Monday was a strange day for Newcastle fans. There were claims that only two signings could arrive this summer, then that was shortly followed by the announcement of Yankuba Minteh’s arrival and talk of an imminent bid for a Germany international.

Newcastle to bid for Felix Nmecha

According to the Telegraph, Newcastle are preparing a bid for Wolfsburg midfielder Felix Nmecha.

They state that Toon officials have been tracking the 22-year-old for months, and that he could cost £15million. That kind of figure will not eat too much into Eddie Howe‘s transfer budget, as he looks to strengthen a squad that is set to compete in the Champions League.

If he arrives, Nmecha will add more depth to Howe’s midfield, and the Telegraph state that the Toon boss is a big fan of his ability to go box-to-box. That kind of physical output is really appreciated by Howe, whose Newcastle team are incredibly athletic.

The ability to go box-to-box is what has made Joe Willock and Joelinton so successful on Tyneside, and Nmecha is comparable to the latter.

He is big and powerful, capable of winning the ball back high up the pitch and protecting it with his large frame. It might be a lazy comparison, but he plays a bit like a right-footed Joelinton, which is certainly not a bad thing.

Nmecha has also chipped in in the final third this season, scoring three goals and providing six assists for Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga.

While he is not the type of high profile name Toon fans were expecting, Nmecha could be an astute addition to the squad. The recruitment have not missed since the change of ownership, so we must trust that enough due diligence has been done to deduce that Nmecha would be a great fit.

And for as little as £15million, he could prove to be a bargain if he succeeds at St James’ Park.
