Newcastle United are saying goodbye to Dan Ashworth, which means they will say goodbye to his transfer input.

The 52-year-old has been placed on gardening leave, with Manchester United set to bring him to Old Trafford. However, it is unclear when that will happen as the Red Devils still need to agree compensation.

Dan Ashworth could cost Man United as much as £20million, which is a staggering amount for a behind the scenes figure.

Any money Newcastle receive will go into their transfer kitty, and create some breathing room with regards to the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.

They were unable to sign anyone in January, and have already been making plans for the summer. One position they want to address is striker, while another is centre-back.

And a new report from the Telegraph suggests that Dan Ashworth had identified a potential defensive reinforcement.

Newcastle have been interested in Marc Guehi

According to the Telegraph, Dan Ashworth has been interested in Newcastle United signing Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace.

The report states that Liverpool are now going to try and sign the England international this summer, while he could also be on Man United’s radar if Ashworth arrives at Old Trafford in time to reignite his interest.

As for Newcastle, it will be interesting to see if they target Guehi despite Ashworth’s departure. He would certainly be a great addition to Eddie Howe’s squad, and would be viewed as a long-term replacement for Fabian Schar.

At 23, Guehi is the ideal age for Newcastle. He has been outstanding for Palace, and looks like he can go on to play at an even greater level. In fact, Danny Murphy has even described him as a ‘Champions League level player‘. That is ideal for Newcastle, as that is a level they want to regularly be at after competing in the Champions League this season.

That is the level that Ashworth was trying to get Newcastle to, which is why he was keen to sign players of Guehi’s quality. Now Ashworth is on his way out, but the Magpies will still be able to try and land the centre-back if they remain keen.
