Newcastle United were not able to strengthen during the January transfer window.
Despite the fact Eddie Howe was reportedly eager to bolster his options throughout the squad, Newcastle were frustrated on the FFP front all month.
While that is believed to have annoyed those behind the scenes, it thankfully seemingly won’t be the case forever.
Indeed, with PIF committed to keep trying to find ways to bring more money into the club, a big summer for the club has been predicted.
Now, some insight into where funds may be spent has emerged.
Newcastle transfer news: The two positions Eddie Howe wants to strengthen
According to The Athletic, both a new striker and a new central defender will be sought this summer.
They claim Callum Wilson could depart the club after links away during the January transfer window and that “at least one” forward should arrive, with both wide attackers and central strikers on the radar.
Defensively, “at least one” centre-back is expected to be chased and it is anticipated that Newcastle will be busier this summer than they were last year.

Newcastle transfer news: Big boosts
A new central defender was thought to have been on the radar last summer but the budget just didn’t stretch that far. With Jamaal Lascelles linked away and Fabian Schar now 32 and surely unable to go on forever, extra depth there would be a big boost.
Attacking wise, Wilson and Alexander Isak seemingly cannot be relied upon for a whole season. Though both prolific, they’ve missed too many games and the options behind them look rather weak, with Anthony Gordon having failed to impress in that role at times.
An extra striker could ease the burden on Isak somewhat even if Wilson were to leave.
It’s certainly promising to hear the summer window won’t be as bleak as the January one.
