Newcastle United fans have been gearing themselves up for the prospect of Miguel Almiron leaving the club this month, but his future remains up in the air.

There are plenty of players linked with leaving Newcastle United right now, but it is the Paraguay international who is the most likely to depart.

He is the subject of interest from Saudi Arabian club Al-Shabab, with the Magpies putting a £30million price tag on his head. A fee in that region would be enough for Newcastle to sell, but a move to the Middle East might not actually appeal to Almiron.

It has been claimed that he is not necessarily enthused about the prospect of taking his talents to Saudi Arabia, while an update from journalist Craig Hope shares details on how he feels about leaving Newcastle United altogether.

Miguel Almiron prefers to stay at Newcastle

According to the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope, Almiron would actually prefer to stay at Newcastle right now.

He wrote on X on Tuesday: “Word this morning is that Almiron prefers to stay & Saudi club would have to up offer anyway.”

Bad news for incomings at Newcastle United this month

If Almiron does prefer to stay at Newcastle then it is difficult to envision him leaving. He is a really important player for Eddie Howe, so it would be a shock to see the club force him out the door against his will.

The 29-year-old still has a fair bit of time to run on his contract, with his current deal due to expire in the summer of 2026.

And with Almiron seemingly keen to remain on Tyneside, that could make it a very challenging end to the January transfer window. Newcastle need to sell before they can buy, and it looked like Almiron would be the man to go.

But that no longer feels likely – unless he has a change of heart in the coming days.

However, Almiron’s preference will likely see Newcastle put their interest in Morgan Gibbs-White on hold. The Magpies had identified the Nottingham Forest star as a potential replacement for the speedster.

But Newcastle will need to replace Almiron eventually, and you have to imagine that his future on Tyneside will be up in the air again in the summer if he does remain at St James’ Park beyond the January transfer window.
