Club officials are now travelling to England to try and secure the signing of a key Newcastle United player who has played a huge role this season.

Besiktas first showed interest in Jamaal Lascelles earlier this month but it was unclear if Newcastle would be willing to sell their captain for what was rumoured to be a ‘small amount‘.

Now, a new report from Fotomac claims that the Turkish club are sending representatives to finalise the deal for the 30-year-old who has played 22 times for Newcastle this season.

Newcastle could lose their captain in January

Lascelles is one of several players who Newcastle could part ways with this month if a fee is agreed and the player is keen to make the move away from Tyneside.

Kieran Trippier, Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron are all also being rumoured to be on the market as the club receive multiple offers for the trio but are yet to accept any of them.

Lascelles is probably the least important to the first team for Newcastle but Eddie Howe is known to be a big fan of the ‘unbelievable‘ centre-back and won’t want to lose such an important figure in the dressing room.

But things may be out of the manager’s hands if the club accept an offer for the former Nottingham Forest man in a bid to raise more funds for either a January signing or to add to the budget for their summer plans.

Newcastle’s depth in defence isn’t good enough

While Lascelles may not be starting ahead of either Fabian Schar or Sven Botman, it’s so important that Howe has a quality centre-back available to slot in if one of them is to get injured.

As we saw when Botman was ruled out for three months with a knee injury, Lascelles can still do a great job in some high pressure games when he’s called upon.

With just six months left on his contract it’s understandable that Newcastle would try to move him on if there’s little chance of a renewal, but they need to have a replacement already lined up.

With their main priority being a new midfielder in January, Newcastle could leave themselves very short at the back if Lascelles does depart Tyneside after 10 years at the club.
