It was a mixed day on the fitness front for Newcastle United on Saturday.

While Newcastle lost both Fabian Schar and Joelinton to injury during the win over Fulham at St James’ Park, Eddie Howe did at least recover one key player.

Indeed, as had been rumoured before the game, Sven Botman finally made his return.

The Dutchman was a late substitute after three second-half goals had finally broken down a ten-man Fulham side, playing for the first time since the Magpies thrashed Sheffield United 8-0 way back in September.

It was fantastic to see the 23-year-old back in action and Botman took to Instagram after the game.

Sven Botman: Newcastle star now speaks after injury

Botman addressed his followers on Instagram after his six-minute cameo at St James’ Park.

The defender captioned a photo of himself in action: “It has been a tough period but I’m so happy to play football again with this amazing team! See you Tuesday.”

Newcastle injuries: Botman may have to step up again soon

Such has been the nature of Newcastle’s frankly ludicrous injury crisis, it seems unlikely Botman will be afforded the time to be eased back into action.

In an ideal world, he would slowly start to ramp up his return from a long-term lay-off but more injuries and a relentless schedule do not make that easy.

With Schar going off, defensive cover will be needed. Aside from playing Dan Burn centrally, Howe does not have many other convincing options behind Botman.

Paul Dummett and Emil Krafth may have impressed against Manchester United in the last round but Tuesday night feels like a different kind of test.

Newcastle head to Chelsea in the Carabao Cup quarter-final. Though it is hardly ‘must-win’ territory just yet, failure to progress would be hugely disappointing.

With that in mind, Botman may have to start.
