A midfielder is on his way to Newcastle United, but it is not the one that Eddie Howe is hoping for.

While the Magpies continue to chase a loan deal for Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips, another midfielder has seen his loan deal terminated.

Isaac Hayden joined Standard Liege during the summer transfer window, taking his talents to Belgium as he looked to rebuild his career after falling down the pecking order at St James’ Park.

He has not featured for Newcastle United since December 2021, but reports began to emerge late last year that his time with Standard Liege could be cut short.

It then became much more real when Standard Liege CEO Pierre Locht announced that the 28-year-old was unlikely to stay with the club for the entirety of the season. He was pretty scathing about Hayden too, branding him as ‘inconsistent‘.

There has been speculation that Hayden could soon join a club in England, and that is now a step closer to becoming a reality after Standard Liege’s latest announcement.

Newcastle United recall Isaac Hayden from loan

They have announced via their official website that Newcastle United have recalled Hayden from his loan spell. He made 11 appearances during his time there.

In a short statement, they wished Hayden the best for the rest of his career.

With Newcastle deciding to bring the former Arsenal man back to Tyneside, it would surely suggest that another move is already lined up. There is now way he is going to play for the Magpies again, that is for sure.

Wherever Hayden goes next, it needs to be somewhere that he can call a home. He should be in his prime right now, but he has struggled to kick on since Howe’s arrival at Newcastle.

Injuries have massively hindered him, but he still has plenty of time to get back to his best and play regular football somewhere. He was incredibly reliable in a black and white shirt, helping the club during some difficult periods.

That is why it is such a shame to see what has happened to him in recent years. Here’s hoping his next move is a successful one, with his Newcastle contract due to expire in 2026.
