Newcastle United are hoping to sign a midfielder during the January transfer window, but one could actually leave St James’ Park this month.

All the talk is about Kalvin Phillips heading to Tyneside on loan from Manchester City, but whether or not that deal actually happens remains to be seen.

It has been claimed that Phillips is keen on a move to Newcastle United, so he must feel as if he could have a future at St James’ Park.

However, one man who does not have a future under Eddie Howe is Isaac Hayden.

The 28-year-old is currently in the middle of a season-long loan with Standard Liege, having joined the Belgian side during the summer transfer window. But he could be bracing himself for a change of scenery very soon.

Newcastle could loan Isaac Hayden to Preston

According to the Northern Echo, Preston North End are interested in signing Isaac Hayden on loan during the January transfer window.

The report states that the Championship side are eager to discuss a deal for the midfielder, and that Newcastle are willing to accommodate a return to England as long as the financial side of the move makes sense for them.

The Northern Echo add that Hayden is a player who has no future at the club, with his last appearance for the Magpies coming in December 2021.

He did not even train with Newcastle United during the summer following the end of his loan spell at Norwich City, despite the fact that his contract at St James’ Park runs until 2026.

A move to Preston North End would mean cutting his loan spell at Standard Liege short, but there has recently been speculation about him returning to Tyneside. However, that has been disputed by Hayden, who branded the story as ‘nonsense’.
