This season has offered something of a reality check for Newcastle United.
Eliminated in the group stage (albeit valiantly) of the Champions League and way off the pace in the Premier League, the FA Cup remains the only chance of genuine success for Newcastle and ambitious owners PIF this time around.
Throw in an injury crisis, Sandro Tonali’s ban and Dan Ashworth’s departure and it all makes for rather difficult reading.
Indeed, that’s without mentioning a certain Bruno Guimaraes.
While the Brazilian has made positive noises in regard to his long-term future, he continues to be linked with a move away from St James’ Park.
Now, journalist Dean Jones has provided some fresh insight.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the noted transfer insider shared that the club would be facing a “big test” when it comes to keeping the player.
“Now, they’re adamant publicly that they don’t want to lose players like Guimaraes, [Alexander] Isak, and [Sven] Botman,” he said.
“But I think the big test will come around Guimaraes. I think that that will be the one that really tests them this summer.
“It will be interesting to see if they are set up structurally to hold off bids for him and to ensure that the player isn’t tempted to go for something bigger.”

In an ideal world, Guimaraes would be on Tyneside for many years to come. A “unique” player in the eyes of Eddie Howe, Newcastle haven’t actually won a Premier League game without him playing since his £40m arrival in January 2022.
Still, if he were to go, Newcastle will not crumble. Neither Alexander Isak or Sven Botman are likely to be sold and reports from iNews last month suggested fans can expect some big-name incomings even in the event of Guimaraes leaving.
At some point, Howe needs to find a way to operate without the midfielder. Such an over-reliance cannot be healthy, regardless of whether or not he remains a Newcastle player.
It would be a real shame to see such a talented player depart but, sadly, keeping him long-term may not be realistic.
Either way, Newcastle need to get used to life without him in the team at some point.
