Newcastle United cannot simply go out and buy whoever they want, whenever they want.

For all the talk of PIF’s millions, Eddie Howe has constantly stressed that the club simply do not operate with a bottomless pit of money.

Indeed, the start of this summer transfer window has been frustrating for Newcastle, as Howe admitted following the opening win of pre-season against Gateshead on Saturday.

While Sandro Tonali has been signed, there has been little positive development on the pursuit of Harvey Barnes since the links initially emerged.

Which makes the recent links to Napoli star Khvicha Kvaratskhelia so interesting.

The Georgian has been linked with Newcastle for a while but would surely cost huge money after his stunning performances as the Italian side cantered to a first Serie A title in a generation last season.

As exciting as those links are, however, a deal does not look likely.

Amid reports of an £82m offer from Newcastle, BBC Sport’s Harry De Cosemo has provided an update.

It is claimed the 22-year-old is simply unattainable right now.

Kvaratskhelia only moved to Naples last summer and the Italian giants are seemingly in little rush to sell.

That kind of transfer always looked a pipe dream

With FFP looming large at Newcastle this summer, the idea of going out and paying close to £100m for one player always seemed somewhat far-fetched.

While Kvaratskhelia is certainly of the age profile PIF have tended to target, that kind of money looks prohibitive for Newcastle as things stand.

That does not mean everything is doom and gloom. The club deserve our trust when it comes to transfers given their record since the takeover, even if it would have been nice to get more recruits in before the tour of the United States.
