While Bruno Guimaraes has not returned to Newcastle United as a Copa America champion, someone who did win it this summer is on the Magpies’ radar.
Bruno Guimaraes represented Brazil at the Copa America, but was only able to reach the quarter finals. It was a wildly disappointing tournament for the 26-year-old, but Bruno’s early exit was to the benefit of Newcastle United.
The midfielder is now back with the Magpies and in Japan for friendlies against Urawa Red Diamonds and Yokohama F Marinos, while the likes of Anthony Gordon and Kieran Trippier are still absent after reaching the final of the Euros – UEFA’s answer to the Copa America.
But Bruno is yet to be joined by any major new signings, with Newcastle so far unable to make a transfer breakthrough. However, that could soon change, with Luke Edwards suggesting that Newcastle are close to making their first big signing of the summer.
Newcastle United aiming to sign a winger
Who it will be remains to be seen, with Newcastle in the market for a right-sided centre-back and a right winger.
The latter will be much harder to recruit, with Paul Mitchell looking for a forward who can compliment Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon in the final third. He needs to find someone who is better than Miguel Almiron and Jacob Murphy, as well as being capable of playing at a Champions League standard.
The likes of Jarrod Bowen and Michael Olise have been linked, but both targets have been too ambitious.
However, that might not be the case with Nico Gonzalez.

Update on Nico Gonzalez to Newcastle
There have been reports in Italy that Newcastle United have made an offer for Nico Gonzalez.
The Fiorentina winger could be available for £25million, which is a fairly reasonable fee. It is considerably less than Olise, who would have cost the Magpies more than double that amount at £60million.
However, rumours of interest from Newcastle have only came from the Italian media – until now.
According to the Athletic, Gonzalez is on Newcastle’s list of targets, and is a player who the club have been watching. However, they do deny that a bid has been made for the 26-year-old.
The latter is not massively surprising, but this is the first time that a British outlet has reported that Newcastle United are taking a look at the man who played five times as Argentina won this summer’s Copa America.
And that is very exciting, as Gonzalez could be an astute addition to Eddie Howe’s squad. Gonzalez has been compared to Bernardo Silva, which is extremely high praise, while he is a player who can operate in multiple positions. That is a quality that Howe massively appreciates, as he aims to recruit players alongside Paul Mitchell that can take the club to the next level.
Gonzalez’s 16 goals last season suggests he might be able to do that, although he is perhaps not as much of a blockbuster signing as other targets would be. However, that is not necessarily a bad thing.
Whether Newcastle make a move for the Argentine winger remains to be seen, but he is very much on the Magpies’ radar.
