Newcastle United are yet to make a proper breakthrough in the summer transfer window, but that could soon change.
The Magpies have made three senior signings so far this summer, but there have not been any major arrivals at Newcastle United. The club have brought in Lloyd Kelly on a free transfer from Bournemouth, while Odysseas Vlachodimos and John Ruddy have arrived to boost the goalkeeping department.
They will all enhance the Newcastle United squad, but they are not players who immediately improve Eddie Howe‘s starting XI. That has to be the Magpies’ priority, as they aim to improve on last season’s seventh-place finish.
Sporting director Paul Mitchell has been tasked with signing a centre-back and a right winger, but is yet to have any joy.
However, that could be about to change.
Newcastle United could now be ‘close’ to signing someone
That is according to the Telegraph’s Luke Edwards, who has taken to X to provide an update on Newcastle United’s summer transfer activity.

Edwards believes that a ‘breakthrough’ could be on the horizon, with the new Premier League season now less than three weeks away.
He wrote on X: “I think we are close to seeing a breakthrough in #nufc recruitment this summer. Trying to find out more but could be Thiaw. Could be a name that comes completely out of the blue.”
Malick Thiaw feels the most likely after Howe’s comments
The only name that Edwards has suggested could arrive at St James’ Park is AC Milan centre-back Malick Thiaw.
He is the Magpies’ top defensive target, with Eddie Howe a huge fan of Thiaw.
In fact, the Newcastle manager actually spoke about the 22-year-old following the Magpies’ arrival in Japan.
Howe was asked about Newcastle’s pursuit of the defender, and admitted that Thiaw is a ‘very good player’. While he did not provide any insight on a transfer to Newcastle, he perhaps said more than he normally would about a player that has been linked with a move to Tyneside.
And movement with the Thiaw deal would make sense, as AC Milan are closing in on a deal for Strahinja Pavlovic. He is also a centre-back, and his arrival could open the door for Thiaw to depart the San Siro.
If a transfer breakthrough is imminent, Thiaw feels like the most likely contender. However, Edwards has suggested that it could be someone completely out of the blue. It certainly will be that if it is not Thiaw, as there is no other player that has been as heavily linked with joining Newcastle United.
