Newcastle United are focussing on outgoings, with Miguel Almiron nearing a move away from St James’ Park.
It was recently reported that Newcastle think Almiron will go in January, and that is now suddenly looking even more likely.
Newcastle are set to accept Atlanta United’s offer for Almiron, with the 30-year-old on the brink of an emotional return to the club who the Magpies bought him from in 2019.
The Paraguayan has been keen to return to the MLS, and it looks like he will get his wish. As for Newcastle United, they will receive around £10million for the privilege.
New interest in Newcastle United defender Matt Targett

However, Almiron is not the only Toon player attracting interest from the United States.
That is according to TBR Football’s chief correspondent Graeme Bailey, who has told Geordie Boot Boys that Matt Targett is a target for Charlotte FC.
“It does make a bit of sense, because It’s Dean Smith, who was his former boss at Aston Villa,” he said.
“They are one of the teams that like Miguel Almiron too.
“We know there has also been interest in Targett from Anderlecht and Frankfurt. There is a bit of interest in him, but whether a deal gets done…
“Newcastle are willing to let him go on loan. Eddie Howe likes him – they are not desperate to get him out the door. It does not do much for them in terms of PSR, as they are not selling him.
“It is not like an Almiron situation where they are looking to cash in.”
Matt Targett needs minutes away from Newcastle United
Geordie Boot Boys recently revealed that Newcastle are willing to loan Targett out, with the left-back struggling for first-team minutes.
The defender was not on the bench on Wednesday night, as Newcastle beat Wolves 3-0.
But Targett did start on Sunday during the Magpies’ FA Cup win over Bromley. He even got himself a couple of assists, setting up Lewis Miley and winning the penalty that Anthony Gordon converted.
It was Targett’s first start since November 2023. That appearance only lasted a minute as he picked up a nasty hamstring injury in a Carabao Cup win over Manchester United.
The 29-year-old needs to play regular football, but that is unlikely to happen at St James’ Park. Lewis Hall has made the left-back position his own, while the presence of Lloyd Kelly means that Howe can afford to sanction Targett’s exit.
Interest is mounting, and he could have the opportunity to work with Dean Smith, who was his manager at Aston Villa. However, it remains to be seen if a deal will be struck.
