Alexander Isak to Liverpool in doubt and Newcastle United feel sorry for him, he may have been ‘strung along’

Alexander Isak’s potential move to Liverpool is now in doubt, and Newcastle United actually have some sympathy for him.

Liverpool could walk away from the Isak deal, having seen an opening offer rejected by Newcastle United.

There is still some debate as to how much that bid was actually worth, but one thing is for certain. It was well below Newcastle’s valuation of Isak, which is said to be over £150million.

Clearly, there remains a chance Isak could go. If Newcastle sign a big-name striker or two, perhaps their stance will soften and the Sweden international will be afforded the move he wants so badly that he’s prepared to set his legacy at St James’ Park on fire.

This saga has taken so many twists and turns that it’s hard to confidently predict what will happen. However, an update from Craig Hope really has changed the mood.

Alexander Isak ‘was never Liverpool’s priority’

According to The Daily Mail, there is a feeling that Hugo Ekitike was always Liverpool’s priority this summer.

The Reds, of course, signed the Frenchman after stealing a march on Newcastle.

Hope goes on to add that sources suggest Liverpool have “bottled it” and that while their interest was genuine, they were not prepared to pay Newcastle’s huge asking price. The Magpies have been baffled by the offer.

The report suggests Isak may have been strung along and that even figures inside Newcastle feel sorry for the striker, whom they feel is being badly advised.

There are zero winners from the Alexander Isak saga

Newcastle fans would be wise to react to the latest development with caution. There’s still a long way to go during this summer’s transfer window, and to rule out further developments would be foolish.

Still, it’s hard to see any winners right now. Isak doesn’t want to play for Newcastle, who could now have to deal with a seriously unhappy player for the season ahead.

Liverpool, meanwhile, don’t get (so far at least) the player they were prepared to pay over £100million for.

There’s little point in pretending Isak definitely won’t join Liverpool this summer. The latest development, however, does not put the move in a good light.
