Newcastle United have not had the easiest of summer transfer windows.
Not only have they constantly been snubbed in their pursuit of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi amid a number of rejected offers, Newcastle have seen some of their key players linked away.
Bruno Guimaraes is being touted for an exit even after the £100m release clause in his contract expired, although the Brazilian has recently confirmed his intention to stay.
Alexander Isak was also thought to have been a target for Arsenal but, thankfully, remains at St James’ Park.
Then there’s Anthony Gordon.
The England international was reportedly tempted by the idea of a move to Liverpool after the two clubs held talks during a frantic June period in which Newcastle needed to raise funds to comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), which do not allow clubs to lose more than £105m over a three-year accounting period.
Newcastle ultimately raised enough cash to meet the criteria and duly avoided a ten-point deduction too, all while keeping Gordon.
Still, the links with the Reds have continued this summer and club legend Alan Shearer has now shared his thoughts on the matter.

Alan Shearer speaks on Anthony Gordon’s Newcastle future after links with Liverpool
Writing in his BBC Sport column before the start of the new season, Shearer explained how much seeing the England winger depart at this stage of the window would disappoint him.
“I’d be amazed if they or Anthony Gordon left at this stage, especially after the club sold two young players, Elliott Anderson and Yankuba Minteh, to meet the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules,” he wrote.
“I would be surprised, and disappointed, if Gordon was sold and hopefully nothing will happen on that front.”
Anthony Gordon is set for contract talks at Newcastle
The good news is that Newcastle appear to be trying to secure Gordon’s long-term future.
His contract expires in the summer of 2025, leaving the club in a difficult position. Until a new deal is signed, they risk not getting maximum value out of Gordon if it did come to a sale, due to his dwindling contractual status.
Luckily, Gordon is reportedly set for talks over a new deal at Newcastle imminently.
