Newcastle United are doing their best to keep Anthony Gordon away from Liverpool, after nearly sending him there in June.
Heading into the summer, there were no real fears of Anthony Gordon leaving Newcastle United. There was interest in Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak, but no talk of Gordon being in the mix to depart as well.
But that changed when Newcastle’s PSR situation became critical. The Magpies needed to make up around £70million, or suffer a points deduction. PIF did not want a points deduction, so Newcastle needed to bring in big money fast.
They did it by selling Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson, but there was a chance that Gordon could have gone, such was the Magpies’ desperation.
Newcastle almost sold Anthony Gordon in June
Newcastle offered Gordon to Liverpool, and there were fears that the 23-year-old wanted to join the Reds. The deal could even have seen Joe Gomez move the other way, with medicals pencilled in for both players while they represented England at Euro 2024.

In the end, the transfer collapsed, with Newcastle finding an alternative solution to their PSR nightmare.
However, speculation over Gordon’s future has continued, despite Newcastle and Liverpool having no further contact over the England international.
Newcastle officials now set for talks with Gordon
Now Gordon is set to return to Tyneside, after receiving an extended break following his international exploits with England at Euro 2024.
He will be welcomed back with open arms, as well as the chance to earn a bit more cash.
According to the Athletic, Newcastle United are going to open contract talks with Gordon when he returns from his holiday next week.
They report that the club wants to reward Gordon for his brilliant performances last season, as well as fend off any interest from Liverpool.
Gordon ready to return to Newcastle after extended break
At the moment, Gordon is not with his Newcastle United teammates.
They are in Japan for a pre-season tour, with Newcastle beating Urawa Red Diamonds 4-1 on Wednesday. Next up is a friendly with Yokohama F Marinos on Saturday, with Bruno Guimaraes predicted to start.
But there will be no Gordon, who will link back up with the Magpies when they return from the Far East. The attacker has been away on holiday, and shared some pictures of his trip on his official Instagram account.
He was given an extended break following an arduous campaign. He was almost an ever-present during a gruelling season for Newcastle United, and his performances took him to the Euros. That will have been taxing too, despite only making one appearance for the Three Lions.
All the while, there has been speculation over his future. It has been a very challenging period for Gordon, with so much going on.
Things will hopefully settle down now, as Gordon prepares to return to Newcastle United. And he could be welcomed back with a new contract, as the club gets set to show their commitment to him.
Hopefully the feeling is mutual, and Gordon extends his stay at St James’ Park despite the lure of Liverpool.
