Newcastle United want to sign Mason Mount this summer, and pundit Gabby Agbonlahor thinks he needs to leave Chelsea no matter what.

Mount‘s future is up in the air due to his contract status, with his current deal due to expire in 2024. That has led to speculation that Chelsea could cash in this summer, with a report claiming that he will cost £50million.

That is a lot of money, and would make him Newcastle’s second most expensive signing ever. The Magpies have been linked with Mount, with various pundits claiming that a move to St James’ Park could be perfect for the England international.

Now Agbonlahor has given his thoughts on Mount’s Chelsea future, and is adamant that he should change clubs ahead of next season.

Newcastle target Mason Mount needs a ‘fresh start’

Agbonlahor has been discussing Mount’s situation and TalkSPORT, and explained why it is time for his Chelsea career to come to an end.

“I think he has to go,” he said.

“Not worked out for him this season. Three goals, two assists. Not good enough for where Chelsea want to go.

“But there’s clubs that will take Mason Mount. Look at Liverpool – Liverpool will take midfielders from everywhere. They’ll have Bellingham, they’ll have Rice, they’ll have Mount. Would he fit in a three at Liverpool?

“At Bayern Munich, you do see players linked with old managers. We don’t know if that’s definitely true.

“There’s a top player in there in Mason Mount, but sometimes being at a club since you were a kid – maybe it’s gone a bit stale there. He needs to move on and have a fresh start somewhere.”

Change can revitalise Mount’s career

Agbonlahor knows all about staying at one club and letting your career go stale. His final few years at Aston Villa were really disappointing, having came through their academy.

While Mount and Agbonlahor are not the same calibre of player, the retired striker does make a good point about the 24-year-old.

Perhaps it is time for Mount to join a new club, especially with the influx of talent at Stamford Bridge. He is at risk of being lost in the shuffle.

While his numbers in the Premier League this season are not great, there is no denying that he is a top quality player who would thrive at most Premier League clubs. He would be a gamechanger at Newcastle, for example.

And in all honesty, his numbers aren’t even that bad when you look at all competitions. He actually has nine goal contributions in total. That is a lot less than the previous campaign, however, when he provided 13 goals and 16 assists. And the season before that it was nine goals and nine assists.

There has been a drop off this season, and Agbonlahor believes his Chelsea career is going stale. If it is time to move, hopefully Newcastle do try to bring him to St James’ Park.
