Darren Bent says Mason Mount is perfect for Newcastle

Newcastle United continue to be linked with a move for Chelsea’s Mason Mount in the summer, and now Darren Bent has shared what he thinks about Mount and his next destination.

Speaking on TalkSPORT, Bent discusses whether or not Mount gets into the starting eleven of the current top six saying that Liverpool and Newcastle would be the most likely before listing off why Mount would be the perfect addition for Eddie Howe this summer:

“I’m surprised Newcastle aren’t heavily in for him. He’d be perfect for them. If you’re trying to get to the next level he’s exactly what you’re looking for. He’s young, he’s English, he’s an international, he’s played in big, big games, won big trophies, been a player of the year at his club,” said Bent.

“If you’re trying to build and attract players to your club, you don’t go and buy someone whose 28/29 that’s maybe in between whether ‘are they going to go on to the next level or are they going to start to fall away?’ He’s in his prime.”

Darren Bent isn’t alone in thinking Mount is perfect for Newcastle

It’s now believed that Mount could leave Chelsea for £50million as talks over a new deal have stalled.

Bent joins Tony Cascarino in backing Mount to join Newcastle saying they’re a perfect fit. When you break down what Bent has said about the England international, he really makes it sound like a no-brainer for Eddie Howe. His age and his credentials make him an ideal transfer target.

FFP could be the stumbling block again

What will likely put Newcastle off won’t be so much the £50million asking price, but potentially the player’s wage demands. The Daily Mail reported last year that Mount had refused a £200,000-a-week deal at Chelsea going on to say that he wants to match Raheem Sterling’s £300,000-a-week.

There’s more chance that he could knit fog than there is of him getting that kind of wage at Newcastle next season so if a move is going to happen he will need to lower his expectations in that department, or the PIF and Amanda Staveley will have to rip up their entire wage structure and gamble everything on European football to avoid FFP issues. I know which is more likely.

On the flip-side though, should he trust in the project and make the switch, he could find himself on those wages in the future when Newcastle dominate Europe thanks to him and Bruno Guimaraes bossing the midfield. Food for thought, Mason.
