Newcastle transfer news: Toon watching Mason Mount situation closely

Newcastle United are continuing to search for a new midfielder for next season, and it could lead them to Mason Mount.

That is because 90min claim that the Magpies are watching the Chelsea star closely as talks stall over a new contract at Stamford Bridge for the 24-year-old.

Mount’s current Chelsea deal expires in the summer of 2024, meaning he will be in the final 12 months of his contract when the current season comes to an end.

That is why Graham Potter’s side are looking to hand him an extension, but talks are not going to plan according to 90min. They report that negotiations between the club and the player are proving to be challenging, despite Mount’s desire to remain where he is.

But while he does want to stay at Chelsea, he could be forced to move on if new terms cannot be agreed. And he has a plethora of clubs eyeing his signature.

Newcastle one of multiple clubs keen on Mason Mount

According to 90min’s report, Newcastle are one of four Premier League clubs who are keeping an eye on Mount. The others are Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United.

Understandably, English football’s elite clubs are ready to pounce if Mount does become available. He is a top class midfielder, and someone who managers appear to enjoy working with. He was a favourite of Frank Lampard, while Gareth Southgate often favours him for the Three Lions.

But Mount’s role at Chelsea is currently unclear under Potter following a raft of new signings. There is suddenly a lot more competition, which has put Mount’s position in the side under threat.

With Newcastle keen to sign a midfielder this summer, Mount would be a blockbuster addition. He is still young, has lots of Premier League, European and international experience, is a ‘big-game player‘ according to Alan Shearer and has the engine to suit Howe’s pressing style. And that is before you even consider his goals and assists. Last season he provided 29 goal contributions in a Chelsea shirt.

Those numbers show what a signing he would be for Howe, but it feels incredibly unlikely that Chelsea will let him leave. Given the desire from both sides to find an agreement, the most likely outcome is that Mount signs a new deal.

But Newcastle are one of the sides keeping an eye on the situation, and preparing to swoop in if the opportunity arises.
