Newcastle United could look to sign free agents this summer when the transfer window opens.
While the Magpies suddenly have incredible wealth, they can’t simply throw cash around like there’s no tomorrow.
Financial fair play implications mean Newcastle need to be careful, which may push them towards free transfers this summer.
Luckily, there is a plethora of talent whose contracts are expiring. Big names such as Kylian Mbappe, Paul Pogba and Paulo Dybala could become free agents, but they’re more than likely beyond the Magpies’ reach.
However, here are seven free agents Newcastle could sign this summer…
Jesse Lingard

In an ideal world, Jesse Lingard would already be a Toon player.
The attacking midfielder almost joined in January, but was denied a move by Manchester United. He’s definitely leaving Old Trafford this summer, and Newcastle are reportedly keen once again.
He was needed in January, and would still be a welcome addition this summer.
James Tarkowski

James Tarkowski was tipped to become one of the new owners’ first signings back in October. However, that didn’t happen.
He stayed with Burnley, and will be hoping to keep the Clarets in the Premier League. Regardless, he could be on the move for nothing this summer, and he could be an astute defensive addition for Howe.
Tarkowski has bags of top flight experience and could prove to be a smart signing on a free.
Christian Eriksen

The Northern Echo have claimed that Newcastle will make an offer to sign Christian Eriksen this summer.
His comeback is going brilliantly, and there’s still a chance he could extend his stay with Brentford. He’s played an important role in keeping the Bees up, with manager Thomas Frank describing Eriksen as ‘world class‘.
With Newcastle on an upwards trajectory, he may see a move to St James’ Park as the next logical step. He would also reunite with Kieran Trippier, who he shared a dressing room with at Tottenham.
Adnan Januzaj

Adnan Januzaj was once tipped to be the next Ryan Giggs at Manchester United. A couple of early goals for the Red Devils had fans salivating.
However, he didn’t kick on in England, with a disastrous loan spell at rivals Sunderland ending in relegation.
But he’s rebuilt his career at Real Sociedad and could give Howe options in attack. Capable of playing on the left and the right, Januzaj is an established Belgium international and still has plenty of years in the tank at just 27.
When you see what Howe has done for various Toon players, he could surely rebuild Januzaj’s reputation in the Premier League as well.
Eddie Nketiah

Linked with Newcastle in January, Eddie Nketiah’s move to St James’ Park was called off after Arsenal got rid of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
He’s yet to sign a new deal at the Emirates, and has shown in recent weeks that he can be a goal threat in the Premier League.
Depending on the type of striker Howe wants, Nketiah is someone worth looking at.
Boubacar Kamara

Boubacar Kamara turned down a move to Newcastle last year, and who could blame him? That was when Mike Ashley was in charge, and there were no signs that the Toon were going to improve.
But everything has changed now, and so has Kamara’s price tag. His Marseille contract is winding down, and he could be the perfect midfield partner for Bruno Guimaraes.
He can also play in defence which is an added bonus.
Matthias Ginter

The German defender has already confirmed he’s leaving Borussia Monchengladbach in the summer.
Matthias Ginter was linked with the Toon before January, but no move ever came to fruition.
But with no transfer fee and more time for an international player to bed into English football, Ginter could be a great signing on a free.
He’s been described as a ‘leader‘ by German legend Lothar Matthaus, which is exactly what Newcastle need. You can never have too many leaders on a pitch, and we need the right type of characters joining the club.
