Newcastle United have already made a big move in the transfer market this summer.

Sandro Tonali is now officially a Newcastle player, becoming only the second midfield signing of the PIF era.

With that position now strengthened, attentions are now turning elsewhere.

Eddie Howe’s side will be playing Champions League football next season and the squad duly requires reinforcement.

While the defence has been the rock upon which Newcastle have built their success, targets are being eyed in that area.

Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella is an interesting one.

The £62m star impressed at Brighton but struggled at Stamford Bridge after his huge move.

Newcastle sporting director Dan Ashworth is reportedly a big fan of the 24-year-old, having worked with him on the south coast.

Still, despite his struggles, the Spanish international is eager to stay in west London.

According to the Evening Standard, Cucurella wants to try and impress under Mauricio Pochettino.

The report also adds Newcastle are chasing another left-back this summer amid links with a move for Arsenal’s Kieran Tierney.

Previously, it has been claimed Howe is looking to move Dan Burn into a central position going forward.

No big deal for Newcastle

While Cucurella can hardly be blamed for the total mess at Chelsea last season, he hardly covered himself in glory.

Though his form at Brighton was impressive and indicated perhaps there’s a much better player there than what we saw in west London, it would be an expensive option.

Thought to be on wages of around £170k-per-week, that looks particularly steep for someone who endured such a difficult time of things last time out.

With Newcastle having spent so much money on Tonali, value for money feels an even bigger concern right now.

Other options must be considered.
