Mauricio Pochettino is set to wield the axe at Chelsea to reduce the squad and Newcastle United have their eye on a potential bargain in Marc Cucurella.

Newcastle are looking for defensive cover this summer and could now make a cheeky bid for a player Chelsea paid £60million for just last summer.

According to The Mirror, Newcastle are looking at a potential £30million deal for Marc Cucurella who only moved to Stamford Bridge from Brighton a year ago.

Dan Ashworth brought Marc Cucurella to England when he was at Brighton

While Cucurella’s form for Chelsea hasn’t been anywhere near as good as it was at Brighton, Dan Ashworth will be aware of what Cucurella is capable of.

Newcastle’s Sporting Director was responsible for bringing Cucurella to the Premier League, bringing him to Brighton from Getafe in 2021 for just £15million when he was the South Coast club’s Technical Director.

Cucurella could be a shrewd signing by Newcastle if they can pick him up for around £30million. At 24 he is a long way off hitting his peak as a defender so Eddie Howe could get his claws into him and get his confidence back.

Despite being a left-back by trade, Chelsea played him on both sides of the centre and even left wing last season, so it’s hardly surprising he didn’t have a great season. He was playing in the worst Chelsea side we’ve seen since Roman Abramovich took them over as new owner Todd Bohely demonstrated a complete lack of football knowledge.

Should Newcastle sign Kieran Tierney or Marc Cucurella?

When a club is in such a mess like Chelsea was last season, it’s hard for anyone to come out of it looking good.

Cucurella could return to his best at Newcastle after a few weeks of Howe’s intensive training.

I’d personally rather have Kieran Tierney, but I would not at all be disappointed if we bought Cucurella instead.
