The real reason why Newcastle United have fallen behind Liverpool and Man City this summer, it could be genius

Newcastle United have endured a slow start to the summer transfer window, falling behind the likes of Premier League champions Liverpool and Manchester City in the race to make signings.

The Magpies are still working on deals, with reports on Thursday that Newcastle United made three bids for three Premier League players.

Anthony Elanga, James Trafford and Joao Pedro are all on Newcastle’s radar, with Eddie Howe keen to be busy this summer and make crucial additions to his starting XI ahead of the Magpies’ return to the Champions League.

However, it has not exactly been the case yet. Newcastle have signed Antonio Cordero from Malaga, but that is the only confirmed deal so far, and it is not even a player for Howe’s starting XI. Newcastle’s top targets are interested in moves to the club this summer, but deals are not yet agreed.

It has been reported that Newcastle will do more business in the next week, but that leaves them at risk of falling even further behind the likes of Man City and Liverpool, who Howe will want to challenge towards the top of the Premier League table next season.

With fans frustrated by no major additions at Newcastle so far, it is clear why it has been such a slow start.

Newcastle United waiting for the PSR deadline to make transfers

Last summer, PSR was a minefield for Newcastle. They found themselves around £60m down and in need of profit to avoid a points deduction. Reluctantly, Newcastle sold Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to make up the money they needed, but it meant Howe lost two promising players at the beginning of their careers.

This summer is a lot different, and Newcastle are better off due to their involvement in the Champions League during the 2024/25 campaign, and lucrative clothing deal with Adidas.

Newcastle do not need to sell any of their players this summer like they did in 2024, so any exits will surely be calculated and for as much money as they can get. The likes of Sean Longstaff and Joe Willock are reportedly “available” at Newcastle this summer, so Howe could look to cash in on the pair.

Business should pick up next week, and that is because it is believed that Newcastle are waiting until after the PSR deadline on June 30 to make their signings. The last three years of spending have been tough for the club, but it has been reported that Newcastle will receive a £73m PSR boost once the deadline passes due to their previous losses dropping off of the three-year cycle.

In theory, that means Newcastle have another £73m to spend in the transfer market, enough to buy a Joao Pedro or an Elanga. Even though Liverpool and Man City have stolen a march by spending big money on Florian Wirtz and Nico Gonzalez, Newcastle are right behind them and are expected to bring those players in that Howe needs.

Newcastle United can take advantage of Premier League clubs struggling with PSR

Last summer saw Newcastle on their knees due to PSR, but this time it is the Magpies standing over another Premier League club who are desperate to sell.

Aston Villa are in serious trouble with PSR and are at risk of a points deduction due to its heavy spending over the last two seasons. That means that they are likely to sell players to ensure they do not lose points for the 2025/26 season.

Reports earlier in June stated that Newcastle are interested in Villa’s Jacob Ramsey, with the midfielder reportedly valued at around £29m by Unai Emery.

Newcastle can take advantage of a team struggling with PSR by poaching one of their best players for an absolute bargain compared to what they have been quoted before.

However, Villa may have found a loophole by selling their women’s team, a similar move made by Chelsea to avoid any punishment in recent years.
