Newcastle United have made approaches for Premier League trio Joao Pedro, Anthony Elanga and James Trafford – a statement of intent from Eddie Howe.

Business has just picked up in the summer transfer window for the Magpies, as Eddie Howe looks to bolster his squad ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

Newcastle United are looking to improve several positions in the transfer window, with the goalkeeper and the right side of the attack two areas of the pitch where Howe is very eager to improve.

Reports in June stated that Newcastle are in talks with Brighton over Joao Pedro, but they came to a halt after the Magpies looked to spend less than his £60m asking price.

Elsewhere, Nottingham Forest rejected Newcastle’s £45m bid for Anthony Elanga and stressed that he is not for sale this summer. Despite that, Newcastle were eager to place another bid for Elanga and have done exactly that.

Additionally, Newcastle are continuing talks for Burnley’s James Trafford, with the 22-year-old reportedly already agreeing to personal terms with the club. With Newcastle pushing for another signing in the transfer market, a new report has suggested what could happen if bids are accepted.

Newcastle United could drop interest in Joao Pedro or Anthony Elanga if bids are accepted

While bids have been placed for the pair, it does not mean that they will both be signing for the club this summer.

Joao Pedro nearly joined Newcastle in 2022, but the deal was dropped when Alexander Isak became available. On the contrary, Newcastle could bring Isak’s international teammate in Elanga to the club to help them going forward.

According to Luke Edwards of the Telegraph, Newcastle could decide to drop their interest in one of the pair depending on which club accepts the deal first.

A boost for the Magpies is that all three players are interested in joining the club this summer due to Newcastle’s involvement in the Champions League next season. Joao Pedro could play as a right-winger due to his creativity, but Howe could look to sign Elanga as he is a natural right-sided attacker who has already proven he can find the back of the net and bag an assist in the Premier League.

Newcastle have reportedly set a “soft deadline” for these deals, with Howe eager to have at least one of them at the club for pre-season.

How much Newcastle United have bid for Joao Pedro, Anthony Elanga and James Trafford

The three deals will no doubt bring a lot of excitement to Newcastle fans who have been dying to see a new player join the club after almost two years without improvements to the starting XI.

The three transfers reportedly combine to a total of £125m, which would still leave them with enough money to make further improvements to the squad.

According to the same Telegraph report, Newcastle’s bid for Pedro is believed to be around £50m, £10m less than what Brighton are looking for.

After talks, Newcastle have offered £25m plus add-ons for Trafford, which is likely to be rejected as Burnley are looking for £40m for him, which is the same fee as the buy-back clause Manchester City have for him.

There is no word on how much Newcastle are putting forward in their second bid for Elanga, but it will likely be significantly more than the £45m they initially offered.

Newcastle are not likely to make these signings until after the June 30 PSR deadline, so it may be the case that deals are agreed next week.
