Newcastle United were said to be interested in Monaco centre-back Axel Disasi this summer but the Magpies never made their move for the player now said to be on his way to Chelsea.

Along with Newcastle, Manchester United were said to be after Axel Disasi from Monaco with the 25-year-old valudd at around £40million.

However it now looks as though the Frenchman, described as a ‘complete and dominant‘ defender, is set to join Chelsea in a £38million deal.

Disasi was disappointed Newcastle didn’t bid after he targeted move

According to a report in 90mins though, Disasi was disappointed that Newcastle never made a move for him this summer.

While many outlets reported Newcastle’s interest in Disasi, with some going as far as to suggest that the club had agreed terms with the player, it was Keith Downie of Sky Sports who appeared to be on the money when he claimed that there was no interest in Disasi from Newcastle and that any talk of a move was purely agent-driven.

Downie’s claim now seems to be spot on given that neither Newcastle or Manchester United have won the race for the defender.

Chelsea’s interest seemingly came out of nowhere and it suggests that they played right into Disasi’s agent’s hands as they engineered the move by leaking stories saying Newcastle were interested.

To be honest, Newcastle could have done a lot worse signing Disasi given the clear need for at least one more defender in the squad, but it looks like we are too late now.

Schar’s injury scare highlighted the lack of defensive depth at Newcastle

Eddie Howe‘s priority now is to bring in more options in defence with full-back Tino Livramento seemingly a high priority, but there’s also a need for a right-sided centre-back to cover for Fabian Schar.

Newcastle had a recent scare when Schar limped off the pitch in the pre-season game against Chelsea, but reports since suggest that the Swiss international will just miss a few days training and should be fine for the start of the season.

Still, it did serve to highlight the lack of depth in the squad when it comes to defenders.
