Six players who could leave Newcastle United in January

While fans love to get exciting about possible signings, this January transfer window could be more about players leaving for Newcastle United.

The past two transfer windows have been manic for the Magpies. Big money has been spent by the new owners, with Alexander Isak becoming the club’s new record signing.

The January 2023 window is set to be a bit quieter, with Newcastle’s squad looking much healthier. However, there are some players who could be moved on, be it permanently or on loan.

Here are six players who could leave Newcastle in January

Ryan Fraser

The 28-year-old is arguably the most likely player to leave St James’ Park during the January transfer window. He has been limited to just three Premier League starts this season, and is reportedly frustrated with his lack of minutes.

That is why he has asked to leave, with Brentford and Southampton keen to sign him. Considering he already has top flight interest, it feels all but certain that Fraser’s Newcastle career will end next month.

Joe White

Joe White failed to secure a loan move away during the summer due to injury, and has been very vocal about his need to get out there and gain more first-team experience.

That should be on the cards for the 20-year-old, with a report claiming that Dan Ashworth will send the youngster out on loan.

Where he goes remains to be seen, but another stint in League Two seems likely after representing Hartlepool United last season.

Jamal Lewis

While he returned to the Premier League squad this season, Jamal Lewis has not played a lot of football. The left-back spot has belonged to Dan Burn, with Matt Targett spending most of the campaign as deputy.

Those two will continue to battle it out, but for Lewis it looks like he needs a move away. A loan move could be for the best, as Howe clearly sees potential in the £15million man.

Matt Ritchie

He is a vital member of the dressing room, but Matt Ritchie’s time at Newcastle could be up. The 33-year-old was described as ‘integral‘ last season by Howe, but has been limited to just one start this campaign. That came in the League Cup, and it’s fair to say he struggled.

A move back down south should be on the cards for Ritchie, who has been a fantastic player in black and white.

Dylan Stephenson

Another youngster who should be loaned out. Dylan Stephenson got a taste of senior football out in Saudi Arabia, and scored in the 5-0 win over Al-Hilal.

He will be keen to make the step up from the academy like Elliot Anderson has, and needs to get out there and experience proper first team football. The 19-year-old isn’t going to get that this season at Newcastle, but could in the future if he continues his development out on loan.

It will be up to Ashworth to decide what is the next step for the young striker.

Garang Kuol

Garang Kuol hasn’t officially joined Newcastle yet, but he will leave in January. His £600,000 move to St James’ Park will become official at the start of next month, but it has already been claimed that he will be loaned out.

Howe and Ashworth are reportedly deciding where to send him, as they ponder a loan move to the Championship. That would give him a proper introduction to English football, but a move abroad is probably more likely.
