Newcastle United midfielder Joe White is tipped to be a star of the future, and wants to leave the club on loan in January.

The 19-year-old failed to secure a temporary move away during the summer transfer window, and is already pining for an exit when 2023 rolls round.

White was one of multiple Newcastle players loaned out in January, alongside the likes of Elliot Anderson. While he thrived at Bristol Rovers, White enjoyed half a season with Hartlepool United.

His time in League Two has seemingly boosted his desire for senior football, and the youngster doesn’t want to be playing Under-21 level anymore.

“I don’t want to be playing Under-21s football any more,” he said.

“Unfortunately I did not manage to get on loan this season so these games are important for me to see where I am at and hopefully get out on loan in January.

“I think after last season, playing first-team football at Hartlepool in the second half of the season, I enjoy the EFL Trophy nights. That’s all I want to do now. The initial aim is to get into Eddie Howe’s first-team squad. And I have got three months to improve as much as possible and play as well as I can.

“I need to be the best player on the pitch for the Under-21s in each game. I think I need to stand out in these games which will help in January.”

White needs to gain more senior minutes

We’ve seen how much Anderson has benefitted from his loan spell. He went to League Two last season and is now vying for a place in Eddie Howe’s starting XI.

White isn’t quite at the same level, having not been afforded the same opportunities as Anderson during pre-season. But he can certainly reach that level.

To do that, he needs to get more experience at senior level. Whether that means returning to League Two in January or taking the step up to League One, it’s vital he’s sent out on loan.

Sporting Director Dan Ashworth will be keen for as many Newcastle youngsters as possible to rise through the ranks under his watch.

For White, that means going out on loan somewhere. Unless there is an injury crisis, there is no chance of him making it into Howe’s midfield at the moment. The Magpies are already being linked with signing a new midfielder in January, which will push White further down the pecking order.

He needs a move away, and will trust Ashworth to sort that out and send him to the best club possible for his development.
