Newcastle United’s summer spending is yet to get going, though there’s a reason as to why owners PIF are refusing to rush into things.

While the transfer window is shut until Monday 16 June, it was briefly opened ahead of this summer’s Club World Cup in the United States.

Eddie Howe called on Newcastle to make signings quickly, though they were not particularly active during the opening part of the summer window.

However, there’s a reason for that, even if fans might be slightly sick of hearing it.

Newcastle United don’t want to risk selling players

According to iNews, PIF are being cautious in the transfer market because they don’t want to have to sell big-name players in future windows.

That makes sense, to a certain extent. While Newcastle do not have to sell their best players this summer, heavy spending could see that change down the line.

While logical, it has sadly been the case for a while now. As far back as December 2023, it was claimed Newcastle would have had to sell players in 2024 if they spent big

Sadly, it seems they are locked in something of a deadlock with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). Though Newcastle are in a healthy position PSR right now, that won’t always be the case if they splash too much cash.

Eddie Howe has already confirmed Newcastle United want PSR revenge

Howe wants Newcastle to take advantage of rival clubs’ PSR position this summer, having seen them do exactly that to the Magpies last year.

Newcastle didn’t want to sell Elliot Anderson or Yankuba Minteh, but were forced to in order to comply with the PSR rules.

Though Newcastle won’t always be in a strong PSR position, the fact they are right now is obviously a positive.

That surely doesn’t mean PIF will suddenly start to throw caution to the wind, but it does suggest fans can feel hopeful ahead of the weeks to come.

The PSR assessment deadline is on June 30. If Newcastle are serious about exploiting it, they do not have long until the big day arrives.
