Anthony Gordon almost left Newcastle United to join Liverpool during the 2024 summer transfer window.

The Magpies were in a desperate PSR position, as they scrambled to comply with the Premier League’s financial rules. The club were so desperate to avoid a points deduction that they even considered selling Anthony Gordon.

It was claimed that Gordon was offered to Liverpool, with the Reds trying to strike a deal for the 23-year-old winger. In return, Joe Gomez would have joined Newcastle United.

The deal ultimately collapsed, and Gordon has since extended his Newcastle contract. However, it was reported that Gordon’s head was turned by Liverpool’s interest, as he missed out on the opportunity to return to Merseyside.

Anthony Gordon makes Liverpool admission

The speculation was infuriating for Newcastle United fans, but it is understandable why Gordon gave the move a lot of thought – especially after what he recently said during an appearance on A League Of Their Own.

The England international spoke about the start of his career, with host Romesh Ranganathan asking Gordon if his family were Everton fans.

“I have no family members who support Everton,” he said.

“None. Not one. All Liverpool. So it was quite strange.

“I was at Liverpool and they released me when I was 11, and then Everton signed me.

“As long as we lost, they [Gordon’s family] were alright. They were like ‘if you score, great, but we want you to lose still’. My family are really, really bitter Liverpool fans.”

Anthony Gordon’s record for Newcastle United against Liverpool

It is very clear that Gordon’s family will not want him to help end Newcastle United’s trophy drought on March 16th!

Newcastle United face Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley, with the game confirmed to be kicking off at 4:30pm.

Despite coming from a family of Liverpool supporters, all Gordon will want is to win a trophy, and he has previously shown that he has no issues with excelling against the Reds.

In fact, Gordon has a good record against Liverpool since becoming a Newcastle United player. He scored his first St James’ Park goal against the Reds last season, while he also found the net in this season’s 3-3 draw.

During his Newcastle United career, Gordon has scored two goals and provided one assist over four games against Liverpool.

However, the one thing that Gordon has not done in his career is beat Liverpool. That will hopefully change on March 16th.
