Anthony Gordon has so far been unable to replicate the incredible form he showed last season at Newcastle United.
In terms of performances, it has been a slow start for Newcastle United in general and especially Anthony Gordon.
The 23-year-old hit double digits in goals and assists last season, but he has suffered a big drop in form in the opening games of the 2024/25 campaign.
Gordon has only scored once in the opening six games, and while he has had small moments of brilliance, he looks as though he’s struggling to match last season’s form.
He was slammed for being “poor” in the 3-1 defeat to Fulham and has been called out on his “shocking” body language – perhaps a sign that he is not in the right headspace.
Anthony Gordon almost left Newcastle United this summer
Gordon has become a key player at St James’ Park since his £45m move in January 2023 and is certainly one of the club’s most valuable assets.
However, with Newcastle struggling to comply with the Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules over the summer, the Magpies considered selling Anthony Gordon to Liverpool.
The Merseyside club held talks with Gordon over the summer but Newcastle set an asking price of £80m.
Liverpool walked away from a summer deal, but have continued to be linked with a move – as have Premier League rivals Arsenal.
Newcastle have made a new contract for Gordon a top priority as they attempt to fend off transfer interest.
Gordon could become Newcastle’s best-paid player if he accepts Newcastle’s terms, but talks are still ongoing and it wouldn’t be a surprise if speculation around his future is having an impact on his performances.
Anthony Gordon’s form dropped at Everton
If we take a glance at Gordon’s time at Everton, it would not be the first time his form dropped off amid speculation over his future.
Gordon was already on the club’s transfer radar, but he certainly drew extra attention after shining for Everton against Newcastle in October 2022.
He would go on to complete a £45m move to Tyneside three months later in January, but his form dropped drastically during the transfer speculation.
Gordon had started the 2022/23 season with three goals in his first 12 league games. Everton picked up 13 points in those games.
After his performance against Newcastle, Gordon only scored once in his final nine games and his performance levels tumbled.
It also had an impact on Everton’s results with the Toffees picking up just five points from the next nine games.
Newcastle United must prioritise Anthony Gordon contract
It seems history may be repeating itself with Gordon struggling to perform on the pitch amid so much noise about his future.
Sorting out Gordon’s contract so he can focus back on his football is a top priority. Once a new deal is signed, it should silence some of the rumours around a move to Liverpool and Arsenal.
