Newcastle United’s priority during the summer was to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace.
The Magpies relentlessly pursued the 24-year-old, with Paul Mitchell believing he could sign Guehi.
However, that proved not to be the case. Guehi was Eddie Howe’s top target, and Mitchell failed to bring him to Tyneside.
Newcastle United were priced out of a deal, and pulled out of negotiations on the penultimate day of the transfer window when it emerged that Crystal Palace wanted £75million for Guehi.
Mitchell’s very public pursuit of Guehi ended in tears, and there has been quite the fallout at St James’ Park. There has even been talk of a ‘civil war’ at Newcastle United, after Mitchell conducted a rather clumsy interview to try and deflect the blame away from himself.
Newcastle’s new priority involves Anthony Gordon
Signing Guehi was seen as a priority, and Mitchell failed to deliver.

Now the summer transfer window is over, and Newcastle must readdress their priorities behind the scenes ahead of January. And while they are unable to sign players until the start of 2025, they can get other important business done.
According to the Northern Echo, one of the Newcastle executive team’s key priorities for the next few months is to tie Anthony Gordon down to a new contract.
The 23-year-old’s current deal expires in 2026, and it was reported during the summer that Newcastle want to talk to Gordon about a contract extension.
The Northern Echo add that formal talks are yet to begin, while they also report that Newcastle would also like to extend Alexander Isak’s contract.
It is vital that Newcastle keep Anthony Gordon at St James’ Park
After what went on during the summer transfer window, it is vital that Toon officials provide Gordon with a suitable contract offer.
The Magpies almost lost their number 10 amid their PSR nightmare, with Newcastle offering Liverpool the chance to sign Gordon.
It is a move that appealed to Gordon. He is obviously from Merseyside, and grew up as a Liverpool fan despite playing for Everton.
That is why there was speculation that Gordon’s head was turned by talk of joining Liverpool. Alas, the deal collapsed when Newcastle found another way to solve their PSR situation.
With Gordon still at St James’ Park, the club needs to show him some love. They need to make commitments to him that prove he is going to be a pivotal part of a team that wants to be very successful in the coming years.
Newcastle have a special player in Gordon, and almost risked losing him this summer. It would have been a disaster to see him go, and now the Magpies must make amends by securing his long-term future.
