Newcastle United are enduring a miserable January transfer window, but there is hope that the summer will be much brighter.
Spending will be much less restricted, meaning the Magpies will have the chance to rebuild. And they have already been linked with a mega signing.
It has been claimed that Eddie Howe’s side are interested in signing AC Milan superstar Rafael Leao this summer. The claim comes from French outlet Telefoot, who also believe that the 24-year-old is a target for Paris Saint-Germain.
While it might be a bit of an outlandish claim, the thought of Leao heading to Tyneside is certainly tantalising – especially when you consider what our front three could look like if he were to arrive in the North East.
Rafael Leao could complete Newcastle’s superstar front three
Should the unthinkable happen and Leao does sign for Newcastle, he would become one third of one of the Premier League’s best attacking trios.
He would join Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon, who are just waiting for the next superstar to join them. Miguel Almiron has done well, but we need someone much better to take us to that next level.
Leao would do that, as he is an elite winger who would get the Toon Army on the edge of their seat. It would be like having Allan Saint-Maximin back, but with much better end product.

The Portugal international has got 12 goal contributions for AC Milan so far this season, while Newcastle witnessed firsthand what he is capable of. His dribbling ability caused Newcastle countless problems in the Champions League last year, and he even won the player of the match award for his display in the 0-0 draw at the San Siro – although that decision was dubious.
But Leao is a sensational talent, and could take Newcastle to the next level. We already have an elite striker in Isak, who has scored 14 times this season. He has been called ‘frightening‘, and comparisons to Thierry Henry refuse to go away.
As for Gordon, he continues to get better and better, and could be just as lethal on the right as he is on the left. After one year on Tyneside, he is already a superstar.
Leao has been at that level for years, while his tally of 31 goal contributions last season justifies the claim that he is a world class talent.
Having been described as a ‘genius‘ by manager Stefano Pioli, Leao would be a dream signing for Newcastle. However, it is hard to see this one becoming a reality – especially with Eddie Howe’s side unlikely to qualify for next season’s Champions League. As we saw recently, Leao certainly belongs on Europe’s grandest stage.
