Newcastle United are very keen on signing a European star this summer who has the potential to be as good as Cristiano Ronaldo.

Newcastle are preparing for a huge transfer window in six months times where they can really overhaul the squad and make a big push to get back amongst Europe’s elite in the Champions League.

A new report from Telefoot suggests they may try and do that by signing AC Milan’s Rafael Leao, though they will have some tough competition from PSG who are also interested.

Newcastle now want Ronaldo-like attacker

Leao heavily impressed going forwards in the two games he came up against Newcastle last year, though his efforts on the defensive end left a lot to be desired.

The Portuguese international clearly has the potential to be a ‘world class‘ talent and he’s already shown in the last two seasons he can be very effective with his record in the final third.

In the past two seasons, the 24-year-old has hit double figures for both goals and assists in Serie A with 21 goal contributions in the 2021/22 season and then 25 in the 2022/23 season.

He’s got a very long way to go before he’s hitting standards of Ronaldo, but Leao backs himself to reach the level of his idol in the not too distant future as he continues to develop his game.

Newcastle face tough battle to sign Leao

It’s not going to be easy to attract top talents like Leao to Newcastle in the summer, especially if they don’t have Champions League status to tempt players this year.

PSG, another member of this year’s Group F, are also believed to be interested in signing Leao after watching the attacker score against them in a 2-1 defeat in Italy back in November.

The French giants will no doubt be able to offer the winger a lot more money than Newcastle can at the minute given their current wage structure which those at the top of the club are keen not to break just yet.

There is also the issue of the fee – Newcastle are expecting to have more to spend in the summer than in January, but it’s not clear how much and it’s safe to assume Leao won’t be coming cheap.
