Newcastle United have an ‘amazing’ manager in Eddie Howe, and the owners will do well to remember that right now.
Not because Eddie Howe is suddenly under pressure at St James’ Park, but because one of the biggest names in football who has been tipped to become manager of Newcastle United is suddenly available.
That is Jose Mourinho, who was relieved of his duties as AS Roma manager on Tuesday. He has left the Italian giants midway through his third season in Rome, and will now be looking for his next employer.
A lot of the media will expect it to be Newcastle United. They have continuously backed the Toon owners to go for a megastar manager with a huge reputation, and Mourinho massively ticks that box.
And he also has an emotional connection to the club, given his relationship with Sir Bobby Robson.
The likes of Richard Keys have suggested that Mourinho could be the man to replace Eddie Howe at St James’ Park, but the Toon owners would be undoing all of their good work if they decided to do that.
Newcastle must ignore the Jose Mourinho noise and keep faith in Eddie Howe
Talk of Mourinho to Tyneside will be rammed down our throats by the media for as long as he is unemployed, but we have to trust that the owners know what they are doing.
Going for Mourinho would be a huge mistake, no matter the size of his reputation. Yes, he is larger than life and someone who has won it all, but he is not the elite manager he once was.
His career has been on the decline for a while, while Eddie Howe’s stock is only going to keep rising. The job he has done as Newcastle manager so far has been nothing short of sublime, and the past six weeks has been the only time he has suffered a dip.
That has led to questions being asked, largely by people outside of the club and its fans.
But everyone of a Toon persuasion is committed to Howe, including the owners. They see him as Newcastle’s long-term manager, and Mourinho’s availability should not change that.

Mourinho would undo Howe’s great work at Newcastle
There were complaints that Newcastle were defensive and sat back too much on Saturday against Manchester City. Prepare for that to be the norm if Mourinho was in charge.
The feelgood atmosphere and spirit that has engulfed the Newcastle squad thanks to Howe? You can kiss goodbye to that.
Newcastle have got so much right since the change of ownership, and that has largely stemmed from their decision to make Eddie Howe manager. And they will continue to get things right, as long as they keep Howe in charge.
They cannot afford to be blinded by the bright lights that Mourinho brings. As the Special One said himself, Newcastle already have an ‘amazing’ manager in Eddie Howe.
