It’s still early stages but the Premier League season is beginning to take some shape for Newcastle United.
The season is only in its infancy after seven games and remains in its disruptive opening stretch.
We are now amid the October international break, the second of three before the season is allowed to take off undisturbed from late November onwards.
10 Newcastle United stars are away on international duty this month, while seven will be frustrated that they are not playing for their countries over the next week, with World Cup spots on the line.
Though plenty can still and will change as the Premier League unfolds, seven games in is a good stage to assess what’s working and what isn’t for Eddie Howe’s side.
Here’s how Newcastle’s form compares to the same stage last season.

Newcastle clearly haven’t got off to as good a start this year as they did 12 months ago, as they’re three points worse off and four places further down in the Premier League table.
Yet, there are perfectly justifiable reasons for the slight drop off, ensuring it shouldn’t be too much of a concern.
Howe hasn’t had a fully fit squad to choose from once so far, with crucial players like Tino Livramento, Lewis Hall and Fabian Schar being sidelined.
Not to mention new signings Yoane Wissa and Jacob Ramsey hardly kicking a ball, not doing so at all in the former’s case.
The manager had the Alexander Isak saga to contend with in August, with the Swede’s refusal to play meaning the raw William Osula was his only striker and he was forced to play Anthony Gordon up front.
The two goalless draws in the opening three games are testament to that.
Newcastle also have a tougher workload this year, too, having played two extra games so far – Barcelona and Union SG – with their participation in the Champions League.
With all those factors considered, it’s actually impressive that Newcastle have managed to get so many points on the board.
What Newcastle United need to improve
The international break couldn’t have come at a worse time for Howe, who has finally started to see his Newcastle side click after a difficult start.
Performances against Union SG and Nottingham Forest were very promising, with the front three of Gordon, Anthony Elanga and Nick Woltemade looking like a dangerous trifecta.
Hopefully, all three come back unscathed from international duty so they can continue to build their chemistry.
Newcastle have not been as bright going forward so far this season, understandably so with the changes made to the forward line, and they could do with improving their attacking output.
Additionally, with injuries continuing to mount, they need squad players like Emil Krafth and Joe Willock to step up.
