Newcastle United are in talks with Aston Villa over a deal for midfielder Jacob Ramsey, with a deal worth around £40million likely.
Malick Thiaw was unveiled as a new signing on Tuesday night, but the Magpies are still looking for more arrivals before the end of the summer transfer window.
Reports have now stated that Newcastle United are in talks to sign Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa, with Eddie Howe’s side willing to put up £40million for the 24-year-old.
Newcastle are eager to sign a midfielder after Sean Longstaff left for Leeds United in July, and it now looks as though they are close to finding his replacement. There is hope that Ramsey can be signed by Newcastle before the weekend, putting him in contention to play against his former club at Villa Park on Saturday.
Reports of Newcastle’s interest in Ramsey emerged out of the blue, with the deal being in advanced stages, which came as even more of a shock to fans on Tuesday evening. However, the deal makes complete sense for all parties due to an all too familiar reason.

Aston Villa’s PSR issues are forcing them to sell Jacob Ramsey to Newcastle United
Last summer, Newcastle were forced to sell Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to avoid a PSR points deduction. The deals went through just before the deadline, but Howe lost two quality young players who have thrived at their new clubs.
Anderson did not want to leave Newcastle, his boyhood club, but ultimately realised the right thing to do was to go.
In 2025, Newcastle are in a much stronger position with PSR, with their heavy losses from three years ago dropping off the cycle. Their new financial position is evident in their deals this summer, with Ramsey’s £40million deal taking overall spending to around £150million.
Villa do not currently have much room to manoeuvre in the financial department, with UEFA’s squad cost rules also a worry, despite the desire to improve the squad further.
That means they must sell some of their stars, even if they are reluctant to do so. Ramsey is an ideal candidate for a sale, with his transfer fee counting as pure profit due to being a graduate of Villa’s academy. £40million would be a huge boost to their financial position and would allow them to spend further in the transfer window.

Who would Jacob Ramsey replace in Newcastle United’s starting XI if he joins?
Ramsey brings recent experience of playing in the Champions League to Newcastle, something Howe will welcome with open arms, with a busy campaign on the way.
The Englishman played against the likes of Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, so he will be well aware of what the bright lights in Europe are like.
At 24, Ramsey still has a lot of time to improve under Howe before breaking into the starting XI. The feeling is that Ramsey will play as a left-sided midfielder at Newcastle, meaning he would be a long-term replacement for Joelinton, who turns 29 this month.
The Brazilian has been an unstoppable force since moving into midfield in 2021, but he could see his place in the starting XI vanish shortly after Ramsey’s arrival.
