During his time as Newcastle United manager, Eddie Howe has got most things, if not almost everything, right.

His recruitment has been spot on, with the likes of Kieran Trippier and Bruno Guimaraes proving to be transformative signings for Newcastle.

The way he has developed players has been sensational, with Howe getting more out of Miguel Almiron and Joelinton than any manager has before.

And he has made the right decisions when it comes to Newcastle’s youngsters, with Elliot Anderson improving so much under the manager’s guidance. He has been brilliant in pre-season, and it feels like he could be set for an excellent campaign in black and white.

Now Howe has made a big decision about another Newcastle youngster, and it should prove to be another masterstroke.

Eddie Howe’s Lewis Miley decision

Following a sensational performance against Chelsea that led to Bruno Guimaraes calling him a ‘baller’, Lewis Miley became the hot topic of conversation.

The 17-year-old is being given a chance in pre-season, and produced his best display of the summer against Chelsea. He really was outstanding, and did not look out of place.

It was a hugely encouraging performance for Toon fans, who want to see more of the exciting teenager. And it looks like that could happen following Howe’s decision.

The Newcastle boss stated after the match that Miley will not be going out on loan. He will remain on Tyneside, with Howe stating that the midfielder is ‘too young’ to be away from his family.

Excellent decision by the Newcastle manager

You would initially assume that Miley does need a loan. He is already so good that he should be playing senior football, but he probably isn’t going to get that at St James’ Park given the level of competition.

But when you take a step back, of course keeping him on Tyneside is the right decision. He is still only 17, and a move away to somewhere else in the country could be a real risk.

While he might get competitive minutes, the impact of being away from his family at such a young age could be damaging and hinder his development in the long run.

Miley will be eager to play after getting senior exposure over the past few months, but the club are right to look at the bigger picture. He is the future of Newcastle United – providing he is nurtured correctly.

Howe is ensuring that happens by keeping Miley at the club. In 10 years when he is running the midfield in a Newcastle shirt, we will look back at this decision from Howe and realise that it was absolutely the correct thing to do.
