Newcastle United look to have a new star on their hands.

While this has been a frustrating summer transfer window at times, perhaps there is a player already on the books at Newcastle who can help strengthen the squad next season.

Indeed, Lewis Miley made his debut against Chelsea on the final day of last season and starred as Eddie Howe’s side drew with the Blues in Atlanta.

Hailed as a “baller” by Bruno Guimaraes for his performance, the 17-year-old did not look out of place alongside the likes of Joelinton and Sandro Tonali.

Praised for his outing at the Mercedes-Benz Arena, Eddie Howe provided an update on what comes next for the teenager.

Eddie Howe confirms Lewis Miley plan after draw with Chelsea

Much like with Elliot Anderson last season, Howe has confirmed Miley will not be leaving on loan.

Instead, the academy graduate will remain at St James’ Park as part of the first-team squad for the upcoming campaign.

“The plan has been consistent in my mind,” Howe said (via The Athletic).

“He will stay with us this season. There’s no thought of sending him on loan. For me he’s too young to be exposed to that at the moment. I think he needs to stay with his family and to train with us and to learn and develop around the players we have.”

This could be big for Newcastle

Though it’s important not to put too much pressure on a teenager who has made only one competitive appearance, the signs are certainly promising.

No one is suggesting Miley will soon be starting Champions League games for Newcastle and becoming a world superstar just yet but to have another local lad in the team is important.

Back in May 2022, The Athletic claimed the club’s ownership recognised the value of the academy, so much so that part of the reason Paul Dummett was handed a new contract was his standing as a graduate.

Clearly, such sentiment only goes so far and the player still needs to impress but few would doubt that having a young player who has grown up through the levels of the club adds a layer of authenticity to a team.

The future is certainly bright.
