Eddie Howe has addressed Alexander Isak’s fitness ahead of Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup clash with Wimbledon.
The 25-year-old is currently suffering from a broken toe, and missed Newcastle United’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City. Anthony Gordon was outstanding up front in his absence.
Following that game, Eddie Howe also confirmed that Alexander Isak will miss the Carabao Cup game against Wimbledon.
“He definitely won’t feature on Tuesday,” Howe told the Athletic on Saturday.
That comes as no surprise, but it remains to be seen when Newcastle’s most expensive signing ever will be able to play again.
Eddie Howe unsure when Alexander Isak will play for Newcastle again
After Newcastle United play against Wimbledon, they travel to Goodison Park to face Everton in the Premier League. That is the Magpies’ final game before the next international break.

In a perfect world, the £63million striker will be fit to face the Toffees on Saturday.
However, Eddie Howe has told the Athletic that Isak remains a major doubt for the game against Everton.
“With Alex, we’ve not ruled him out [of Everton],” he said.
“We’re sort of assessing him on a daily basis because there is a chance he could be fit for Everton if everything falls into place. Of course, then we have a decision to make. Does he play in that game or do we leave him knowing that he’ll be OK two weeks afterwards?”
Playing Isak against Everton is a risk for Newcastle
Given what Howe has said, it feels unlikely that Isak will be back in time to face Everton on Saturday. If that is the case, it will almost certainly be Anthony Gordon leading the line against his former club.
In truth, it is probably wise that Newcastle delay Isak’s return – especially with the international break looming.
If Isak is deemed fit enough to play for Newcastle on Saturday evening then he is fit enough to play for Sweden during the international break. They have two Nations League games against Slovakia and Estonia.
Ideally, Isak remains on Tyneside during the international break. That would allow him to work on his fitness and ensure he is ready to start against Brighton on October 19th. Newcastle are also hoping to have Callum Wilson back for that game.
Newcastle perhaps need to look at the bigger picture when it comes to Isak’s fitness, and that should result in him missing Saturday’s game against Everton.
