If Newcastle United are still interested in signing Tyler Adams from Leeds United then their chances of doing a deal may have just gone up.

The USA international has been linked with a move to Tyneside following Leeds’ relegation. He is reportedly someone who Toon scouts really like, having impressed at St James’ Park last season during a 0-0 draw.

Adams was excellent on that day, standing up to Newcastle’s physical approach and going toe-to-toe with a group of players who ended up qualifying for the Champions League.

The 24-year-old played brilliantly, and clearly made a lasting impression. And the Newcastle fans also made a lasting impression on Adams, who recently said St James’ Park was his favourite place to visit last season. He described the Toon Army as ‘crazy’, which is spot on!

It was previously claimed that Eddie Howe wants to sign another midfielder, and Adams could be an astute option who could add great depth to our squad ahead of next season. He wouldn’t be a blockbuster addition, but he could be a smart one.

Leeds sign Ethan Ampadu from Chelsea

And a new signing at Elland Road may have potentially increased the likelihood of Adams leaving this summer.

Leeds have announced the signing of Ethan Ampadu from Chelsea. The Wales international has cost £7million.

The 22-year-old is a clever signing, as he is a versatile player who can operate in multiple roles. It is unclear where Leeds plan to use him, but his ability to play as a centre midfielder could be the catalyst for Adams leaving.

Good news for Newcastle

If Leeds plan to use Ampadu in the middle of the park, they might be more receptive to selling Adams, who wants to return to the Premier League after spending just one season in the top flight of English football.

As they already have a replacement, perhaps this could open the door for the USA international to leave.

Alternatively, it could strengthen their hopes of keeping Adams, as he is good friends with Ampadu after the latter spent a year on loan at RB Leipzig, which is where Leeds bought Adams from.

Talk of Adams moving to Newcastle has gone quiet, with another midfielder not currently Howe’s priority. But that might change if the deal for Harvey Barnes is followed by some defensive additions.

That could then lead to Newcastle restarting their midfielder search, and Adams is a player who is highly thought of behind the scenes.

If Newcastle do decide to make a move for the Leeds star, perhaps the Yorkshire side will be willing sellers given the fact a direct replacement has already arrived.
